Lance Armstrong was stripped of his bronze medal he earned at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney following admitting that he took performance enhancing drugs while racing on the Tour de France.  His seven Tour de France championships were already stripped by the international bicycling committee.  I guess he forgot to take them during the Olympics and had to settle for Bronze.

An Al-Qaeda wannabe group took Americans hostage at a gas plant in Ain Amenas, Algeria.  Four American hostages were released and the two other American hostages escaped.  Violence has since ensued resulting in the deaths of at least six hostages from other countries.

A second grade student brought a gun to his Far Rockaway, NY school today.  The gun was found in his backpack.  It could not be determined whether the boy knowingly brought the gun or if one of his brothers stashed  the gun in his bag.  The rest of the class’s “Show and Tell” was cancelled following the gun incident.

It was announced on the news that Conrad Bain had passed away.  He is best remembered for his role as Mr. Drummond in “Different Strokes”.

Pauline Phillips, best known as “Dear Abby” passed away today at the age 0f 94.  Her twin sister was Ann Landers, who had passed in 2002.

The story of Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o’s “girlfriend” has to be the most bizarre story going.  He may (or may not) have known that his girlfriend, who recently died from cancer, never existed.  My imaginary girlfriend is alive and well and is a successful supermodel traveling the world.  That is why (aside that she doesn’t exist) nobody has ever met her.

New York State now has the toughest gun-control laws in the land of the free and the home of the brave.  Among the provisions of the law include a maximum of seven rounds of ammunition allowed in a magazine and mandating that health care workers report anybody who is mentally unstable to a mental health director, who would pass the information to the Department of Criminal Justice Services.  I guess this would disqualify most politicians from being able to possess a gun.

The House agreed to authorize $50 billion of  recovery aid towards Hurricane Sandy.  The hope is that the Jersey Shore and the south-facing beaches of Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Long Island will get as much of the shore’s businesses and rentals ready by Memorial Day.

Today is going to be more fluff than anything because I didn’t get to watch the news.  I will not be posting who won last night’s Golden Globe awards (or any other awards show) because of my disdain for the Cinemafia.

Tonight is the first Monday night since August 27 that there in no football to watch in either the NFL or the NCAA.  No kickoff classics, no Monday Night Football, no BCS Championship.  The only Monday Night Football tonight is the games people are playing on their Wii.

I don’t get the Gannett News Corporation.  One of their newspapers made public the names and addresses of registered gun owners in Westchester and Rockland Counties in New York.  None of their papers have bother to give the addresses of pedophiles who live in neighborhoods except for an occasional police press release.

Before I get to football, New York State has declared a Flu Emergency.  This allows pharmacists to administers to children six months old and older.  The only problem is that with all of the hysteria the media has caused over the flu, there is now a shortage on flu shots.

NFC Division Playoffs: – Falcons 30 Seahawks 28:  Atlanta had a 20-0 lead at halftime and led 27-7 after three quarters before the Seahawks woke up.  Seattle took a 28-27 lead with 2:29 to go in the game only to lose to an Atlanta field goal with under a minute to go.  The Seahawks got the ball in midfield thanks to an ill-advised squib kickoff.  Only a Julio Jones pick saved the Falcons from playoff infamy.

AFC Playoffs:  For a while, it looked like the Houston Texans were going to go home to host the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship.  Instead, they are just going home and the patriots will be hosting the Ravens.  Houston took a 3-0 lead on a field goal and stopped New England three-and-out.  The Texans were moving down the field looking to score a touchdown when they turned the ball over.  By then, Tom Brady became Tom Brady and the Texans defense became Marcia Brady during her “Oh my nose!” moment.

Note:  I have added two pages to the blog:  Celebrity-RIP and Champions.  The links to the page can also be accessed from the tabs on top of any entry or page on this blog.

I haven’t used Reddit, but one of the early founders fo the website Aaron Swartz hung himself yesterday.  He was 26.

AFC Playoff Round – It took two overtimes, but the Baltimore Ravens upset the Denver Broncos 38-35.  My campaign manager is still crying like a baby as he is a diehard Broncos fan.  I did my crying last weekend after the Seahawks beat up my Washington Redskins and Robert Griffin III’s knee.

NFC Playoff Round – The Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers are in a shootout at Candlestick Park (or whatever corporation has the naming rights) Stadium.  Piers Morgan has called for a ban out on shootouts in the NFL as it leads to shootouts in schools and movie theaters.  (The final score will be updated tomorrow as I have to head to bed now. but as of now it’s SF 24 GB 21 in the third quarter with 11:30 to go.)  UPDATE:  Colin Kaepernick threw two touchdowns and rushed for two more as the 49ers advance to the NFC Championship game with a 45-31 victory over the Packers.  Kaepernick amassed 263 passing yards and an NFL record (for quarterbacks) 181 rushing yards.

A slow news day.  What little that did happen were followups of things that happened in the past.  One good thing about slow news days is there aren’t any mass killings or tragedies dominating the news.

James Holmes, who killed 12 people and injured 58 others in the Aurora movie theater killings, appeared in court today only to have his arraignment postponed until March.  It was postponed so that Holmes can undergo a mental health exam leading to speculation that he will plead insanity at the arraignment.

Tomorrow starts a big football weekend as the NFL continues their playoffs with the division round action.  You can read my predictions on my other website.
