It is against the law to have Inauguration Day on a Sunday because then they would have to pay the employees who set up and patrol the Capitol area Sunday pay.  When the 20th falls on a Sunday, then the public inauguration happens on Monday the 21st, so the municipal employees can be paid holiday pay for Martin Luther King Day.

A bunch of senseless hoopla was made about the Clinton photo bomb during Kelly Clarkson’s singing and of Beyonce lip-synching the National Anthem.  The most disappointing part of the festivities was when Alicia Keys changed one of the words of her song to “Obama is on Fire”  She should have sang “Ahmnodt on Fire” instead because I still think I would have made a better President.

Apologies for posting late the last few days.  I am currently fighting a bug of some kind and hope to catch up soon.

Super Bowl XLVII will be “Har-able”.  This is because the head coaches of the NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers and the AFC Champion Baltimore Ravens are brothers.  Jim Harbaugh brought the 49ers into Atlanta and led his team to a 28-24 victory over the Falcons.  San Francisco once trailed 17-0, but scored the final 21 points of the game to win.  John took his Ravens into New England as a heavy underdog and came out with an impressive 28-13 victory.  Tom Brady had the luck of his jinxy cousin Oliver at times.   Super Bowl XLVII will be sponsored by Jimmy John’s in honor of the coaching brothers both coaching in the Super Bowl.

President Obama and Vice-President Biden took the official oaths today as mandated by the Constitution.  Washington DC law prohibits having an inauguration on a Sunday because it costs too much in overtime to stage it on a Sunday.  The public  inauguration will be held instead on Martin Luther King Day because there is no added expense with holding it on a federal holiday (or something).

New York State now has the toughest gun-control laws in the land of the free and the home of the brave.  Among the provisions of the law include a maximum of seven rounds of ammunition allowed in a magazine and mandating that health care workers report anybody who is mentally unstable to a mental health director, who would pass the information to the Department of Criminal Justice Services.  I guess this would disqualify most politicians from being able to possess a gun.

The House agreed to authorize $50 billion of  recovery aid towards Hurricane Sandy.  The hope is that the Jersey Shore and the south-facing beaches of Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Long Island will get as much of the shore’s businesses and rentals ready by Memorial Day.

A commuter bus crashed into a school bus in Old Bridge, NJ.  (Seems like there is a transportation mishap that involves New Jersey every day.)  Fortunately, the school bus had no children.  The commuter bus had over 30 passengers and they were injured.  The bus driver was injured severely.

There was a shooting at a high school in California.  Fortunately, there were no fatalities and only one student was injured.

Vice-President Joe Biden and Attorney Holder Eric Holder held a gun summit in Washington today.  It is somewhat ironic that Eric Holder would be there considering the operation called :”Fast and Furious” and what that entailed.

As yesterday’s news was all about New Jersey, today’s news is all about New York.  The two days and the two states are tied together by today’s first news story:

A commuter ferry from Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey headed to lower Manhattan in New York City (as opposed to lower Manhattan, KS) and crashed into a dock at 14 miles per hour.  Somewhere between 11 and 85 people were injured (depending on when and where you hear the news.

From Manhattan, we head to Queens where there was a crane accident in Long Island City.  Five people were injured and it almost damaged the “Pepsi” sign visible from Manhattan.

Let’s head up the (Hudson) River to Albany, where governor Andrew Cuomo gave his “State of the State” address.  He vowed that unlike New Jersey governor Chris Christie, he would not use any money New York would get from Hurricane Sandy aid to clean up the Jersey Shore.  He also wants to increase minimum wage to $8.75/hour and build seven casinos. (Three casinos each year until he reaches his goal.)

Today was a big news day in New Jersey from one corner to the other and in Trenton.

Budd Lake – Search continues for one teenaged boy who fell through the ice in Budd Lake yesterday.  The other boy who fell was found dead at 1:30 this afternoon.  The boys tried to ride across the frozen lake when they fell through.

Seaside Heights – A man was arrested after climbing “Star Jet”, the Seaside Heights rollercoaster that is currently in the ocean following Hurricane Sandy.  George Angulo climbed to the top of the rollercoaster and draped an American flag.  This action caused the local police to go berserk and try to get him from land, sea, and even helicopter.  Mr. Angulo was soon arrested and brought for a psychological evaluation.  The person who needs an evaluation is whoever decided that that many police and resources were needed to rescue a man who showed no signs of needing to be rescued.

Trenton – Governor Chris Christie gave his annual “State of the State” address.  Most of the address had to do with the continuing relief efforts from Sandy.  He also vowed not to increase taxes despite a projected $2 billion deficit projected in this year’s budget.  Unlike President Obama, Governor Christie doesn’t have a Federal Reserve to print money out of thin air to pay bills.  It will be interesting to see how (if?) this gets resolved.

Today started the preliminary hearing for Aurora gunman James Holmes.  He is charged with a total of 166 charges ranging from weapons possession to murder.  If convicted, he could be serving a bunch of life sentences.

Tonight is the NCAA BCS Championship between the #1 Alabama Crimson Tide and the #2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish.  I think Alabama is the better team, but Notre Dame will win due to bad officiating divine intervention will help Notre dame win the game.

Living in the New York metropolitan area means that the local news always leads with something with the word “Sandy” in it.  Whether it’s the continuing cleanup from Hurricane Sandy or healing from the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings in Newtown, CT,

The Obama Administration has chosen two appointees for the Defense Secretary and for CIA Director.  Not that it matters, but  former Senator Chuck Hagel (a Republican) is being picked for Secretary of Defense and some dude named John Brennan is was chosen to be the new CIA Director.  They both have to go through a Senate confirmation hearing which is painfully boring.
